Welcome to Rhodes! On this afternoon 4 hour tour your licensed guide will pick you up at the "gangplank" of your ship (or at the D'Amboise Gate) and whisk you
away in A/C comfort in our deluxe vehicle to commence a Rhodes Panoramic Drive. You'll be shown the city highlights of Rhodes:Mandraki Port, Town
Hall, Evangelismos Church, and the Monte
Smith Hill, which offers a magnificent view of the aquamarine colored Aegean
Sea and the whole City of Rhodes.
Continuing to the ancient Rhodes Acropolis (which was dedicated
to Zeus, Athena and Pythian Apollo), we will see four standing reconstructed
columns in addition to the restored 2nd century
ancient Stadium and Theater.
Following that, we will visit the peaceful retreat, Filerimos, and its ruins and
foundations of the Temple
of Zeus Polias,
dating back to the 4th century. Also,
amidst the gorgeous singing peacocks, you will see the foundations of the 3rd
century Athena Polias. On
top of these remains are other Byzantine and medieval structures such as the Church of Our Lady of Filerimos, built by the Knights in the 1400's. For some visitors another highlight is to visit to the Church of St George, with its 14th and 15th century wall paintings complete with
scenes from the Passion.
We will subsequently continue on to a true favorite of
the cruise ship passengers, the Grand
Masters Palace in the Medieval City, complete with moat. It staggers the
imagination that the Knights of St John built this imposing city. Note the famous Rhose white pebble 'art' everywhere. It
was built in the 1300s, destroyed in the 1800s, and rebuilt by the Italians in
1939. Enjoy the "Street
of the Knights," unchanged for the last 500 years. Of interest, also, is the fact that Muslims, Christians and Jews have peacefully
co-existed here for hundreds of years.
